A mobile website should let a person complete the same essential tasks as the desktop version. Begin with what readers need to find, understand and do. Responsive styling is useful, but a page fitting the screen does not establish that its navigation, forms or content work well.
Map the essential journeys
Choose representative tasks: find a topic, read an article, compare product details, contact the business or complete a purchase. Record the starting page and expected result. Include people arriving from search or a shared article rather than assuming everyone begins at the home page.
Keep navigation discoverable and its labels understandable. Advertising, overlays and other inserts should not separate the site’s identity from the menu or obstruct an essential control.
Keep important content equivalent
Google’s mobile-first indexing guidance explains that the mobile version is used for indexing. Important content and relevant metadata should remain available on mobile. This does not mean that responsive styling alone guarantees a ranking increase.
Shorter paragraphs or a different layout can help readability without removing substantive information. Avoid hiding the answer to make room for a decorative feature.
Design for reading and interaction
Allow text to resize and layouts to adapt. W3C’s reflow guidance addresses reading without unnecessary two-direction scrolling at narrow widths, with exceptions for content that genuinely needs a two-dimensional layout.
Use clearly labelled controls, visible focus and enough space between targets. For detailed target-size requirements and exceptions, consult W3C’s target-size explanation rather than treating one button dimension as a complete accessibility assessment.
Prepare images, forms and dynamic content
Deliver appropriately sized images and reserve their layout space. Check what happens when advertisements or messages appear after loading. Ensure forms have clear labels, useful errors and a way to recover without losing completed fields.
For an article site, an important task might be reaching the next relevant guide with the menu and search still accessible. For a shop, the test must also include selection, totals and the intended payment process.
Turn the brief into tests
Assign owners and acceptance conditions for the essential journeys. Use the mobile website regression checklist after changes, alongside the accessibility testing guide.
