AI Fraud Detection: Evaluate Alerts, Missed Fraud and Review Costs

An AI fraud score indicates a pattern the system considers suspicious. It is not proof that a transaction or person is fraudulent. A useful evaluation checks what the model detects, what it misses and what its alerts require the business to do.

Define the decision the score informs

Identify whether the system recommends a review, asks for further verification or supports another action. Keep the authorised decision process explicit. Different transaction types and markets may have different costs of a mistaken action, so avoid treating one threshold as universally appropriate.

For example, a payment-review alert may lead an authorised team to check the provider’s evidence. It should not become a public accusation or an unexamined conclusion about a customer.

Examine both kinds of error

A false positive flags a legitimate case; a false negative misses a fraudulent case. Evaluate these against confirmed outcomes and record cases where the outcome remains uncertain. NIST’s AI trustworthiness guidance discusses accuracy measures, including false positive and false negative rates, and the importance of evaluation conditions.

A high overall accuracy figure can be misleading when confirmed fraud is rare. Ask how the provider constructed the test set and whether it represents the activity you actually process.

Compare the full operating cost

Record the alert volume, review time, legitimate transactions delayed and confirmed losses missed. Compare these with the existing process. Count the cost of investigating alerts as well as any claimed reduction in losses.

Do not assume a deployed model continuously learns from every transaction or becomes more accurate automatically. Ask how updates are trained, approved and evaluated, and which model version produced the reported result.

Check data and review responsibilities

Identify the data needed, its permitted use and how long it is retained. Limit access to appropriate staff and approved providers. Establish how an incomplete record or identity uncertainty is escalated before a consequential action is taken.

Require evidence for claims about performance in your context. Vendor demonstrations or broad statements about AI do not establish that the benefits outweigh the implementation and review costs.

Plan a bounded evaluation

Use the fraud alert review and pilot worksheet before changing a live decision process. Keep account and recovery protections aligned with the small business security priorities.
