AI in Entrepreneurship: Tasks to Assist and Decisions to Keep Accountable

AI can assist with parts of running a business. Whether it is useful depends on the task, available evidence and cost of being wrong. A founder remains responsible for choosing the business offer, making commitments and ensuring that work delivered to customers is appropriate.

Break the work into tasks

Separate research, drafting, checking, approval and execution. An AI tool may help summarise authorised notes or propose a first draft. That is different from publishing a claim, agreeing a price or changing an operational system.

For example, a draft reply about delivery needs the actual order status and applicable policy. The business should verify those facts before the reply reaches the customer. A fluent message is not evidence that the promised delivery date is correct.

Define what requires review

  • Externally visible claims: verify facts, evidence and necessary approvals.
  • Financial commitments: keep the authorised decision and payment process explicit.
  • Consequential personal decisions: use the appropriate accountable review, not an unexamined score.
  • Operational changes: test the effect and maintain an authorised recovery route.

Do not put confidential information into a tool until its approved use and data handling have been established.

Evaluate assistance against the original process

Count checking and correction time, not only how quickly the draft appears. Compare representative tasks, including incomplete or contradictory inputs. A tool that saves drafting time while requiring extensive repair may not improve the complete workflow.

NIST’s Generative AI Profile discusses confidently generated false information. This is one reason to verify substantive outputs against the actual source rather than relying on the model’s own explanation.

Assign responsibility before expanding

Name the owner of approved inputs, the reviewer, the person permitted to execute the result and the person who handles exceptions. For a very small business, these may be the same person, but the separate steps should still be visible.

Keep track of important tool or prompt changes so that a new failure can be investigated. Avoid promising customers that an AI-assisted process is error-free or fully autonomous when people still perform essential checks.

Choose a bounded next task

Start with an assistance task that has a clear reference and a manageable review process. Use the AI-assisted operations runbook to document the workflow. Further planning begins with measurable startup goals.
