Marketing Storytelling: Choose the Audience, Evidence and Reader Action

by Make Business | Jun 29, 2025 | Marketing & Digital Strategy | 0 comments

Marketing storytelling gives a reader a concrete account of a problem, a decision and a result. It is useful when that account helps someone understand how a business or product works. A dramatic narrative does not replace evidence, and engagement alone does not prove that a story generated revenue.

This guide helps choose the story’s purpose and evidence. To collect and edit a customer’s account, use the customer-story interview and review checklist.

Choose a reader and a decision

Identify who should learn from the story and what they need to decide. A founder’s origin story may explain why a company exists; a customer case can show the conditions under which a service helped; a behind-the-scenes account can explain how work is done. Choose the format that answers the reader’s question.

For example, a buyer evaluating an implementation service needs to know the starting conditions, work required and limitations. A founder’s enthusiasm alone will not answer those questions.

Build an evidence-backed narrative

A story planning worksheet
ElementQuestionEvidence
Starting situationWhat was happening before the work?Dated records or a confirmed account
DecisionWhy was this approach chosen?Alternatives and constraints
ActionWhat changed and who did the work?Deliverables and implementation record
ResultWhat was observed afterward?Defined measure, period and limitations

Keep inference separate from observation. If a customer reports that work became easier, describe that as their account unless you have a measured comparison. Do not turn an illustrative scenario into a real testimonial.

Keep the commercial context visible

Obtain appropriate permission to use a person’s name, account, images and quotations. Preserve the meaning of quotations when editing. Check whether payments, free services or other connections need disclosure under the rules that apply to the campaign.

For US advertising, the FTC’s endorsement guidance explains that endorsements should reflect honest experience and relevant connections may need disclosure. Other markets have their own requirements.

Adapt the format without changing the claim

A short social post can introduce the problem and link to a fuller case. A longer page can show the process, evidence and limitations. Keep important qualifications available where the claim appears; do not move them out of sight merely to make the short version more persuasive.

Measure the intended reader action

Choose measures that fit the objective, such as relevant visits to a service page, qualified enquiries or readers completing the case. Record distribution and dates. Separate campaign response from later sales unless attribution evidence supports the connection.
